Hanging from a Cuban link chain, the ‘Libertas’ Lady Liberty holds shackles in her left hand to commemorate the end of slavery; a monument intentionally built to celebrate emancipation, relocated to her feet and obscured before completion following American funders’ rejection of Bartholdi’s vision.
